Dear Mr. Flick:

Recognizing the need to further protect people and pets in #Arizona’s potentially deadly heat, on May 11, 2017, Gov. #DougDucey signed into law HB2494, a bill developed to curtail hot-car deaths and allow Good Samaritans to take action without risk of civil liability if they rescue a child or a pet from a #hotcar.

“A few minutes is all it takes for a child or pet left in a hot car to die of heat stroke,” said Governor Ducey. “That’s a scenario we never want to see happen. With this bill, we are protecting Good Samaritans who take action to save a child or pet….”

This “Good Samaritan Law” complements State Statute 13-2910-A7, which defines a crime

as “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly leaving an animal unattended and confined in a motor vehicle” in which “physical injury to or death of the animal is likely to result.”

As the Arizona director for The #HumaneSocietyOffTheUnitedStates (HSUS-AZ), I enthusiastically support the interest and commitment of Chino Valley Animal Control to partner with your Chino Valley Safeway to help spread the word that #Arizona’s heat can prove deadly within a matter of minutes for pets enclosed in a parked vehicle. We have successfully worked with #PetSmart and Pet Club on this pet safety initiative, reminding shoppers through store posters and/or advertisement slots in the grocery carts that part of being a smart shopper means protecting their pets from an avoidable tragedy.

Safeway’s expansive industry footprint, community service and commitment to customers through tender, loving care are well-known. #HSUS-AZ and Chino Valley Animal Control welcome the opportunity to further Safeway’s community stewardship through a partnership that benefits pets and people. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience so we can discuss this collaborative pursuit.

Sincerely yours,

(Written by Don Scott to #Safeway to successfully launch the Pets in Hot Cars PSA campaign)
