by Don Scott Fountain Hills Times Independent, Letter to the Editor One week from today, 35 years ago, Nelson Mandela was released from prison, signaling the beginning of the end for apartheid—the systemic oppression and segregation of non-White South Africans.

Mr. Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his anti-apartheid commitment, even rejecting a deal from the apartheid government for release if he renounced violence. His refusal to accept these terms while the government continued policies of racial injustice cost Mr. Mandela an additional five years in prison.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have gained increased prominence and attention in Fountain Hills. For some in the community, DEI aligns with core values of acceptance, equality, and kindness; however, others seem to use DEI in a more subtle way—employing euphemisms or coded language to hint at their division, discrimination, and prejudice, but careful to avoid self-incriminating statements. Recently, the Town Council majority used DEI, along with race, unity, and climate change, as reasons to reject a $240,000 street safety grant.

Nelson Mandela said, “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” This inspiring message is one I strive to achieve daily. Sometimes, I fail. But it is not for lack of trying.

Change is rarely easy, especially when it involves transformational shifts. We find ourselves in a period unlike any I can remember, one where some are working to advance their self-serving agendas through the marginalization, discrimination, and oppression of others. If successful, this agenda would inflict significant, systemic harm and suffering on many. In the face of this autocratic, oligarchical assault, we've witnessed both steadfast resistance and integrity, as well as acquiescence and cowardice.

There has been only one Nelson Mandela. I encourage you to live his vision and courage.
